What is Botox and how does it work?
You have probably heard of Botox or have friends and family that have had Botox injections. You may be wondering what exactly is Botox?
Botox is a FDA approved facial filler that is injected into the muscles of the face. It works effectively to relax those muscles and block the transmissions of the nerve signals.
Botox is a nonsurgical method to smooth and improve the wrinkles created by facial expressions. These are primarily wrinkles and lines of the forehead and around the eyes (“crows feet”). Botox injections then work to limit muscle expressions ultimately decreasing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, creating a more youthful appearance.
Where is Botox injected and how much will I need?
Botox is injected into the underlying muscles of the face. The over use of facial muscles can lead to:
- Crows feet from laughing or squinting
- Forehead wrinkles from animated facial expressions
- Lines around the eyes from frowning and squinting
It’s difficult to say exactly how much each individual will need. Many factors can influence the units each person will need. Factors that can affect the amount you may need may include: age, gender, depth of the wrinkles and fine lines and the size of the forehead and face.
Allergan, who manufactures the injection, states a total recommended dose of 20 to 40 units. However, the dose can vary and should be administered by a trained professional.
At Rocky Mountain Skin Care Clinic, we have our nurse injector meet with you for a consultation prior to your Botox injection. At this time she will determine what may be optimal for you, what you are comfortable with and what will give you the best results. Our Nurse Injector, Virginia Johnson, RN has over 20 years experience injecting Botox and dermal fillers. She has experience from years of working with skin care clinics, plastic surgeons and dermatologists.
What will the injection feel like and what is the recovery?
Injections can create some discomfort and Botox is no different. We use a very small needle for the injection so you will feel a small prick in the treatment areas. A topical numbing cream may be used if you wish or feel that you may need it. The treatments typically only require 30 minutes. This time also allows for before pictures, a consultation, post care instructions and the injection themselves. The actual injection is short and quick.
Recovery is very simple and straight forward. We provide all post care instructions during your appointment so you don’t have to worry. The discomfort during the treatment will only last for a few minutes. Results can be seen as soon as seven to 10 days after treatment.
How Long does Botox last?
That is a question we get asked very often. The average duration is 3 to 6 months, but this will differ depending on the individual and their facial muscles.
