What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are an aesthetic treatment used to improve and treat the appearance and feel of the skin. These treatments can be applied to the face, hands, neck and upper chest. During a Chemical peel solutions are applied to the desired area, which creates the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The treated or new skin is smoother, less wrinkled, brighter and have less damage.

What type of chemical peels can I get?

Beta Peels

Beta Peels also known as Salicylic or Glycolic peel are commonly known as a light peel. These Beta Peels are applied to remove dead, dull skin cells from the surface of your face, creating healthy, younger looking skin. Beta peels are especially effective on oily, acne prone skin, superficial scars and hyperpigmentation because of its ability to penetrate the pores.

Jessner Peels

A Jessner Peel is a medium peel used to remove superficial layers of skin, reduce mild to moderate wrinkling, scarring, and help to lighten discoloration from hyperpigmentation. Jessner peels also improve the appearance and health of sun-damaged and aging skin. A Jessner peel can be used to treat not only the face but hands, neck and upper chest.

How do you prepare for a chemical peel?

During your first treatment appointment you’ll start with a consultation with our skin care specialist. During that time together they will help to determine which peel is the best treatment option for you and your desired skin goals. You’ll be informed of the details of the treatment, post care procedures and a few dos and don’ts for best results. Our Nurse will then go over a treatment plan designed specific to you as well as product recommendations to ‘seal’ in the best results. They’ll let you know the details about the specific peel you’ll be getting and what to expect, any questions or concerns can be addressed as well.

Before a chemical peel, we recommend that you:

Discontinue the use of retinol or retin-A topical medication for at least 48 hours
inform your skin care specialist about any medications you take
not have been on Accutane for at least six months
take an antiviral medication if you have a history of fever blisters or cold sores to prevent a breakout around the mouth
stop waxing, epilating, or using depilatory hair removal products the week before the peel. You should also avoid hair bleaching
stop using facial scrubs and exfoliants the week before the peel

When should I notice a reaction?

Typically 2-3 days. Beta peels will require less aftercare and should begin to ‘flake’ or peel within the first 2 days. You will still need to watch your sun exposure and post care products that you use. Your ski will be brighter and glowing.

Jessner peels will take about 2-3 days before you begin to see the peeling reaction. Depending on the amount of layers of solution this may determine the amount of days you peel. Typically this can last 3-5 days. Since Jessner peels are a medium level peel you will need to VERY cautious of the sun, topicals and post care. It is recommended that you do NOT go in the sun the day of your treatment.
